Facebook’s first batch of 5-meter Oculus Link cable is now available for purchase worldwide. Oculus Link cable is now shipped to all 22 countries including Europe.
Oculus Link is a feature (currently in beta) that allows Oculus Quest to act as a PC VR headset through any high-quality USB 3.0 cable. This gives Quest owners of gaming PCs access to the Oculus Rift and SteamVR content library.
However, as far as we know, there are no compatible third-party cables longer than 3 meters. Unless, of course, you are using extension cords.
Recall that the official cable was announced along with the function on Oculus Connect 6, and Facebook said that it will be released a little later this year. Until now, Quest owners using Link have adapted third-party cables for this. For example, the officially recommended Anker product.
Unlike most copper USB cables, Oculus Link is an optical fiber option. It is apparently capable of providing 5 Gb / s through a USB 3.0 connector over a distance of 5 meters. In addition, the cable allows you to charge Quest during the game.
So why do you need this cable if you have regular USB cables with extension cords? The fact is that classic cables connected via USB 3.0 are quite heavy and do not differ in a thin form factor. And fiber is about half the weight of copper, and it is also more flexible. This makes it more suitable for VR cable. Especially for games with area tracking.
Another plus is that you don’t have to worry about finding the right combination of cables and extension cords, as some USB 3.0 products with Amazon just don’t work.
