A letter sent to some Oculus Facebook developers suggests that “Rift S” will be officially shown on GDC 2019.
The letter confirms that the developers mention ‘Rift S’ along with ‘Oculus Go” and “Oculus Quest’ ’. This suggests that we should expect the official announcement of the VR headset, the successor to the Oculus Rift in the near future.
The original Rift was released in 2016. In 2019, it was released for retail worldwide. Rift is no longer available in the US on Amazon, Best Buy or Microsoft. Newegg completely removed the device from the list of products.
Rift S was first shown in a TechCrunch report last October. The report showed that the headset will be an iterative update, with increased resolution and built-in tracking system, as the upcoming Oculus Quest console. Last month, we found links in the Oculus PC code on “Rift S” with integrated cameras. Our findings also suggest that Rift S will perform IPD software processing, unlike Rift.
Oculus Insight is a tracking system used on the Oculus Quest autonomous headset. We believe that it will also be used on the Oculus Rift S.
For those who did not know, the first Oculus Rift required the use of special databases that could track the movements of users. We expect Rift S to use its built-in cameras and the Oculus Insight tracking system to eliminate this need.
The initial cost of the Oculus Rift is about $ 600 with the gamepad included in the kit. His latest price drop caused the price tag to drop to $ 350 per set with touch controllers. We believe that the new headset can be positioned so that the price of the Rift will be even lower.
