The original Oculus Rift used HDMI, but its replacement, the Oculus Rift S, uses DisplayPort. It also includes a Mini DisplayPort adapter.

The Valve Index VR headset also uses DisplayPort, and although it doesn’t include a Mini DisplayPort adapter, you can find them on Amazon for about $ 10 if necessary.

If you have a desktop PC, this should not be a problem, since most video cards have several DisplayPort outputs. If you have a VR-ready laptop with DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort, you can also not worry. Note that many laptops are not ready for VR.

However, if your laptop has only HDMI video output, you are absolutely unlucky. We tested HDMI for DisplayPort adapters with Rift S and found that they do not work. We turned to Facebook and were told that no known adapter currently has enough bandwidth to transmit a 1440p 80Hz headset signal, but this may change in the future.

This information should also apply to even higher on the requirements of the Valve Index, but we still do not have an official statement of Valve on this issue.

If your laptop does not have a DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort, but has a USB Type-C port, you may be lucky with two conditions.

First, it is important to note that USB Type-C is a connector, not a signal type. If the Type-C port on your laptop only supports USB, it will not work with the VR headset. It must support “DisplayPort Alt Mode” or be a Thunderbolt 3 port in order to have a chance of at least some compatibility.

If it is a Thunderbolt 3 port, there will usually be a lightning bolt next to it. If it supports DisplayPort Alt mode, it usually has the letters DP or monitor icon, but be sure to consult your laptop’s specifications for more details.

Secondly, the port must be directly connected to a dedicated (usually NVIDIA) GPU, and not to an integrated Intel GPU. To check which ports are connected to which GPU, open the NVIDIA control panel by right-clicking on the desktop, then go to the Surround Sound, PhysX tab.

If this tab shows a USB Type-C port connected to a dedicated GPU, you can use Rift S or Index with a USB-C adapter for DisplayPort. These adapters are available from retailers like Amazon.

The headache of this situation is why all large VR companies have created the VirtualLink standard. Although currently only one laptop supports this standard, with the next generation of VR, we hope most gaming laptops will also be compatible with it.
