By the end of 2019, consumer virtual reality (VR) space will change dramatically, mainly due to the addition of new autonomous virtual reality helmets (HMD) to the market.
Oculus Quest continues to attract the most attention in this regard. Chinese specialist Pico also decided to contribute to the industry with his new product – G2 4K, which the company showed during CES 2019.
If you haven’t heard about Pico before, we’re in a hurry to inform you that the company has always been developing autonomous HMDs like Pico Neo and Pico Goblin. It was during 2018 that Pico launched the G2 device, which uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 XR platform, dual LDC screens and has a viewing angle of 101 °. Nevertheless, the market makes us in a state of constant progress. That is why Pico followed the generally accepted trend and decided to develop a new virtual reality helmet, focused mainly on the commercial market.
When it comes to first impressions, the Pico G2 4K is not really different from the rest of the company's lineup of VR headsets. What is especially striking before you put on the headset is a piece of plastic, which is located on the back of the head of the user. It contains a battery placed there to help distribute the weight evenly.
As for the main change, it is in the new 4K displays. They allow you to avoid the effect of screendoor, which suffers most modern virtual reality headsets. The demonstration was limited to viewing very high-quality close-up images in which individual details could be identified. The level of clarity and color saturation almost made you believe that the object is quite real and is not just an image.
Despite the fact that this is a premium segment of standalone headsets from Pico, the headset has competitors, such as the updated Oculus Go, Oculus Quest or Vive Focus. This is primarily due to the fact that two of the above headsets have built-in tracking of the user's movement, which gives more freedom in VR thanks to the controllers, tracking over a certain area and 6DoF. As such, the Pico G2 4K is much more suitable for institutions that want to demonstrate exciting content, and want a headset with the highest resolution possible in a convenient form factor, which the Pico G2 4K does amazingly well.
