After the rumor of the Hololens 2, an augmented reality helmet signed Microsoft, the giant of Redmond is also working on other projects, this time in virtual reality. Indeed, it is rumored that a new VR headset is being prepared in the premises of the American firm, in collaboration with HP. Called HP Copper, this device would have a very high resolution and would be very comfortable to wear!
HP Copper, the revenge of Microsoft?
In 2017, Microsoft partnered with 6 manufacturers to develop virtual reality headsets under the Windows Mixed Reality platform, an affordable and easy-to-use VR environment. However, these devices have never had the expected success, the fault at a poor quality. Nevertheless, Microsoft would come back with a VR helmet model, the HP Copper, supposed to forget his predecessors!
Specifically, the HP Copper would have as its main asset its incredible screen resolution of 2160 x 2160 pixels per eye! This resolution is certainly lower than the Pimax 8K, but much higher than that proposed by the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive. In addition, the use of new Fresnel lenses would significantly improve the quality of the immersion, allowing a better sharpness of the screen. As for the field of view of the HP Copper, it would be substantially the same as most VR headsets on the market.
Another new feature, which was lacking Windows Mixed Reality headsets, comfort of use. Indeed, the HP Copper would be lighter than most VR devices on the market, and offer a headband system with straps similar to the Oculus Rift. This would make it easier to remove the helmet and not be embarrassed in full experience. It should also be noted that this new VR device would retain the same tracking technology as the MR helmets, ie sensors integrated directly into the device.
A helmet reserved for professionals?
With this new device in virtual reality, Microsoft and HP intend to erase the previous failures of the MR helmets and not abandon the RV market. To do this, it will be necessary to combine quality and affordable price. However, according to the first information we have, it seems that this product is primarily intended for businesses. To be continued…
For now, we have no information on the price of the Copper or its release date. However, the first rumors seem to announce a release in 2019 …
And you, what do you think of this project of HP VR headset?
