Google has opened the source code of the tool Seurat to optimize VR content

Open source technology Seurat for optimizing content for virtual reality devices has become available for developers. The system helps to improve the performance of games on mobile VR headsets. The project source code is uploaded to GitHub along with plugins for Unity engines, Unreal, and a script for the Autodesk Maya editor.

To simplify the shape of 3D objects and compress textures, the algorithm uses a feature of virtual reality content, when the user can see only a limited viewing area. As input, it takes RGB-D images and generates a grid with a reduced number of polygons, while maintaining the detail of the objects.

The result of processing is shown on the example of the VR game Blade Runner: Revelations. The technology reduced the number of landfills from 46,600,000 to 307,000 and increased productivity by 100 times without loss of quality:

Together with the processing technology was released Lenovo Mirage Solo – the first virtual reality helmet on the Daydream VR platform. It is equipped with a mobile processor, so it gives much lower performance than VR devices connected to gaming computers.

Recall that Seurat was announced at the Google I / O 2017 conference. There were also disclosed details about the updated Android Studio 3.0, the final release of which was held in October 2017.
