The exact release date of the device is still unknown.
Microsoft may not do much to develop virtual reality (VR), but its commitment to augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) has never been stronger than today. Having announced the HoloLens 2 headset earlier this year during the Mobile World Congress, as well as opening pre-orders, there has never been any indication as to when the device will actually be launched. Today, this question was answered with the news that HoloLens 2 is due out next month.
This was stated by Microsoft Executive Vice President Harry Shum in his speech at the World Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Shanghai this week, Reuters reports.
No other details were given, including the actual date in September, but for those who managed to pre-order the headset, at least this means that deliveries should begin soon.
The original HoloLens was already released in 2016, offering enterprises the first real opportunity to get acquainted with the technology. Retailed for $ 3,000 USD, the headset was enterprise-oriented. One of the main complaints about the original HoloLens was its field of view (FoV), which is pretty restrictive 35 degrees (for example, the viewing angle of the Oculus Rift is 110 degrees).
HoloLens 2 promises an improved experience compared to its predecessor, offering greater comfort thanks to better balancing – the battery is now located on the back of the head – and, of course, the FOV has been increased. Those who wear glasses should especially appreciate the design. It is much better suited for them, and the front part is articulated so that the user can easily enter and exit any experience.
Naturally, HoloLens 2 will cost its owner a very large amount, namely $ 3,500. You also cannot just pre-order the device. Interested parties will need to go to the official HoloLens 2 page in order to register their interest in acquiring a device before buying it. It is also worth noting that customers must live in the United States, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia or the United Kingdom. If you are part of the Microsoft Mixed Reality Developer program, then you can also access the HoloLens 2 Development Edition, starting at $ 99 per month. This publication is intended to encourage developers to work on the system. The device is available only through this program.
