The company Bigscreen has released an update of the beta version of its social service, which itself calls “big”, that is, it considers it more important than usual. In this case, we are talking about ray tracing in real time, new locations, avatars, an updated user interface, and several other elements that will delight mobile virtual reality users.
Today’s update is the result of a one-year development cycle with many of the features requested by users, as well as corrections of “some of the biggest mistakes and problems our users have encountered,” says Bigscreen founder and executive director Darshan Shankar.
Below we describe the most important features from the update – they are already available on Steam (Vive, Rift, Windows MR) and the Oculus Store for Rift and mobile glasses.
Real-time ray tracing
Previous versions of dynamic lighting were simultaneously demanding of graphic resources and available only on glasses for a PC, so mobile devices were left out.
Now the studio has incorporated ray tracing methods using stochastic discretization and blue noise smoothing, which are designed to realistically conduct light rays from sources in a three-dimensional environment. This implementation of lighting is less resource-intensive, so mobile glasses also get these effects based on ray tracing, which should significantly revive the picture.
Creating rooms through mobile devices
Until now, the owners of mobile glasses were for Bigscreen second-class users. Here is another proof: although the screen showing function from a computer worked on Go and Gear VR, Oculus Go and Gear VR users could not create rooms. This has changed with today’s update. Public or private rooms are available, which can be joined by any user from any platform.
Additionally, the picture is improved by the fact that the update on “autonomous glasses” significantly improves productivity and working time, especially in large rooms with 5–15 people.
New Environment and New Hall
The developers have added to the application a new cinema in the style of an amphitheater, the most luxurious of the proposed. In addition to new visual elements, the hall also received curved rows that facilitate communication, especially in mobile glasses, in which you cannot lean forward. And with the new hall in the past, jumping around the rooms went in attempts to talk to other users while the movie is on: a special room appeared for this.
The hall also contains many closed doors, that is, in the future it will lead to new halls for cinema and other events.
New avatars and user interface
The new tool for creating avatars did not change the cartoon style, but offered fresh hair for men and women, options for facial hair, hats.
Along with the selection of the avatar, everything else in Bigscreen also became a little easier with the updated user interface, which allows you to select options by pressing the finger and the cursor. Large buttons, clearly defined settings and visual improvements refresh the interface, making it less cumbersome.
Details of the update are available on the official Bigscreen blog.
